>What was the real difference between 418s and 421s, besides the obvious magnet....? I've used several of each in various MI apps, and just ain't seeing it...the big difference that is, they're both great for bass, guitars, keys, and vocals.

Apples n' oranges since each was designed for completely different apps. The fact that they can be used in the same cab and get similar results is IMO no doubt due to the marketing dept. wanting to be able to load various models in existing cabs already 'in the field' to hopefully keep the end users from loading other brands (as well as working in those brand's cabs), a major drain on the bottom line after JBL and CV committed to a concentrated effort to unseat Altec as the prosound 'King of the Hill'.

Bfish, thanks for the info, I also noted the slight weight difference and figured it was the magnet too! That 2lbs of magnet seems to make a considerable difference too.

But, they rock, and have that mellow sound, so they are good.
